GFF 2026: JPMorgan bets on AI to transform payments operations

Christine Tan of JPMorgan said the firm is deploying artificial intelligence across four key areas of its payments business — trade, customer service, fraud controls and regulatory compliance.

In trade, AI is being used to analyse and machine-train trade documents to identify potential trade-based money laundering, cutting the process from about nine man-hours to less than one hour, she said.

The firm is also deploying agentic AI in customer service. Its bots and AI agents can support customers by translating and transcribing queries, sourcing relevant information and responding to inquiries, while customer officers validate the responses.

Fraud is another major focus area, Tan said, citing its growing prevalence. “45% of fraud happens on an annual basis, and the growth in terms of year on year is about 50 plus percent,” she said, adding that JPMorgan is using machine-trained systems and filters to identify fraud across its global operations.

The fourth focus area is regulatory reporting and compliance. As the firm operates across multiple jurisdictions with varying regulatory requirements, JPMorgan is using agentic AI to support reporting as well as compliance functions, Tan said.

She said AI use cases are being deployed across the firm, including in the investment bank, where processes such as research and the issuance of IP perspectives have been significantly accelerated, with timelines coming down from nine months to “maybe about five to 10 minutes.”
