Udhampur to get stop on new Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express
Udhampur will be added as a stop on the third and newly introduced Vande Bharat Express connecting Jammu and Srinagar, Union Minister of State and Udhampur MP Jitendra Singh said.
The Railway Ministry has agreed to include Udhampur as a stop for the new train following a demand from the local population and a request from Singh, the minister said.
The move is expected to improve rail connectivity for passengers travelling between Udhampur and the Jammu-Srinagar corridor.
Singh said the decision was taken in response to the "popular public demand" of the local population and an "earnest request" made by him to the Railway Ministry.
The new service will be the third Vande Bharat Express on the Jammu-Srinagar route, further expanding semi-high-speed rail connectivity between the two regions.

Centre tells SC it is reconsidering UGC equity rules
Central government has informed the Supreme Court that it is reconsidering the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) Equity Regulations, 2026, which are currently kept in abeyance by the Court.
“I’m not saying which way it will go, but we are reconsidering it,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the UGC, told a Bench led by CJI Surya Kant.
The Court granted the UGC four weeks to file its response to the batch of petitions challenging the regulations. The Court directed the UGC to file one comprehensive counter-affidavit covering the issues raised by all petitioners.
Copies of the affidavit will have to be furnished to the petitioners, who may file rejoinders thereafter within two weeks, the Court said.
The issue concerns the UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, notified in January. The regulations were challenged on the ground that their definition of “caste-based discrimination” was restrictive and excluded students belonging to the general or non-reserved categories from protection against caste-based discrimination or institutional bias. The petitions also raised concerns over the scope and possible misuse of the new framework. The Court had earlier ordered that the regulations be kept in abeyance.
