Delhi AQI at 364 in 'very poor' category; several areas record 'severe' air quality as GRAP Stage 3 curbs kick in
Delhi's air quality remained in the 'very poor' category on Saturday morning, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 364 at 8 am, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. Several monitoring stations reported 'severe' pollution levels, with IIT Delhi recording an AQI of 443, Punjabi Bagh 433 and Narela 409. The city's AQI showed a slight improvement from 389 recorded on Friday morning.
The readings came a day after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR, two days ahead of Diwali, amid concerns over further deterioration in air quality. Misty conditions prevailed at Safdarjung early Saturday, with the temperature recorded at 17 degrees Celsius at 5:30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Diwali 2026: How to stay safe as air pollution worsens; experts recommend N95 masks, air purifiers
As Diwali celebrations coincide with worsening winter air pollution across northern India, health experts have urged people to take precautions to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants. Firecrackers can add to the existing pollution caused by vehicle emissions, industrial activity, construction dust and crop residue burning, making air quality more hazardous during the festive period.
Experts recommend checking local Air Quality Index (AQI) readings before stepping outdoors, wearing well-fitted N95 or N99 masks during periods of heavy pollution and using HEPA-filter air purifiers indoors. People should also avoid strenuous outdoor exercise when air quality is poor and limit indoor smoke from incense sticks, mosquito coils and candles.
Chest surgeon Dr Arvind Kumar also advised avoiding firecrackers and ensuring masks cover the nose, mouth and chin properly. Experts said electric lights offer a smoke-free alternative to firecrackers, while damp-mopping floors instead of dry sweeping can help reduce indoor dust.
