Gold, silver under pressure as cash crunch drives selling
“Gold and silver are falling despite the war and lower US bond yields. Our assessment is that the need to raise cash is contributing to this weakness. When investors face losses or funding pressure, they may sell liquid assets even if they remain positive on their long-term prospects," said Anindya Banerjee, Head of Commodity and Currency Research, Kotak NEO.
The Gulf is one possible source of this pressure, he said. "Disrupted energy revenues and higher spending are stretching government finances, potentially reducing fresh investment and increasing withdrawals from existing portfolios. However, sovereign funds’ gold transactions are not transparent enough to confirm bullion sales. Gulf-related liquidation remains our assessment, not an established fact. Even reduced buying could affect prices."
Global deleveraging may also be contributing, he stated, adding that gold’s failure to benefit from lower yields is consistent with cash-driven selling, although it does not identify the sellers. "A stronger response to supportive moves in yields and the dollar would be an encouraging sign."
Gold is near $3,900 an ounce and looks "oversold, but that alone does not establish a bottom". Resistance is at $3,950 and then $4,010, with support at $3,850 and $3,750. "A rebound towards $4,000 is possible if selling eases. On MCX, support is ₹1,37,000 per 10 grams and resistance ₹1,44,000–1,45,000. A sustained break below support could open ₹1,30,000. Reserve diversification remains a long-term support, but a durable recovery needs fresh demand to absorb selling."
Silver remains more vulnerable, he said, because of its industrial exposure and smaller market. "After breaking below $50 an ounce, it is attempting to stabilise around that level. High energy prices and borrowing costs remain risks to industrial demand."
The gold–silver ratio has risen towards 78, confirming silver’s underperformance.
