Bihar police, criminals exchange fire in Bihta; 1 injured

An encounter broke out between police and criminals in the Bihta police station area of Danapur, Bihar, with one accused injured and a large quantity of weapons recovered, police said, according to ANI.

SSP Kartikey Kumar Sharma said the criminals were allegedly involved in illicit activities on a boat when police intercepted them, leading to an exchange of fire.

The injured accused, identified as Anish Kumar, is undergoing treatment at PMCH, while the other accused are being interrogated. One or two police personnel also sustained injuries, Sharma said.

The criminals fired around 40 rounds while police retaliated with 22 rounds, he added.

According to Sharma, the accused had been involved in previous cases and an AK-47 was recovered from them last year.

Police recovered one country-made rifle, one country-made carbine, two country-made pistols, one country-made katta and around 25 rounds of ammunition, Sharma said.

219 of 319 Tamil Nadu tourists stranded in Nepal rescued

As many as 219 of the 319 people from Tamil Nadu stranded in Nepal have been rescued and are expected to reach the state by August 31, State Minister Rajmohan said.

The remaining 100 people have not yet been traced and are currently considered missing, he said.

“For the past three days, acting on the instructions of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, we have been camping in Delhi and making various efforts to rescue Tamils stranded in Nepal,” Rajmohan said.

He added that Minister for Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Department Thennarasu is currently in Delhi monitoring the rescue operations. The 319 people had travelled to Nepal through various groups.

“This is an international-scale disaster. In this incident, everyone must work together. Our sole objective is to rescue the affected people,” Rajmohan said.

A 36-member group from Kerala who were stranded in Nepal following a flash flood returned to Nedumbassery after making their way back to India.

India Embassy in Nepal begins process to identify flash flood victims

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu is working with Nepalese authorities to facilitate the identification and handover of mortal remains of Indian nationals killed in the recent flash floods in Nepal.

In a press release dated August 29, the embassy said the Government of Nepal has been releasing photographs and descriptions of deceased victims to assist in the identification process.

The embassy said it is coordinating closely with Nepalese authorities, including the Nepal Police, to ensure that the mortal remains of Indian nationals are handed over to their next of kin after identification.

The embassy will issue further updates in coordination with Nepalese authorities, it said.

The development comes as India steps up its support for rescue and relief operations following the devastating flash floods. India has also deployed forensic teams to assist with DNA analysis for identification of mortal remains.

The flash floods have caused widespread destruction across Nepal, with hundreds killed and thousands reported missing. India is continuing to coordinate with Nepal on the rescue, relief and identification efforts.
