Who was Zubeen Garg?
Born Zubeen Borthakur on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, he grew up in Assam and was named after conductor Zubin Mehta.His father, Mohini Borthakur, was a lyricist, while his mother, Ily Borthakur, was a dancer and singer. Garg dropped out of college to pursue music after gaining recognition for his early compositions and a gold medal at a youth festival in 1992.
His debut album Anamika (1992) brought him fame in the Northeast, but he became a household name with “Ya Ali” from the Bollywood film Gangster (2006). Over his career, he sang in more than 40 languages, recorded over 32,000 songs, and acted in Assamese films such as Mon Jai and Mission China.
