YouTube said on December 19 that certified artists in India would be able to provide free and paid courses to customers beginning next year. This move places YouTube squarely against indigenous edtech startups like Byju's, Unacademy, and PhysicsWallah, all of whom got their start on Google's platform.

Although the instructional video has been available on YouTube for some time, this will allow artists to give viewers a more thorough, structured learning experience. Creators will gain a new revenue opportunity in addition to advertising, channel memberships, and subscriptions in exchange.

"Learning has always been a huge priority for YouTube. We are already the world's largest platform for learning and skilling content around the world," During a media roundtable with reporters, Ishan John Chatterjee, India Director for YouTube, stated.

YouTube's beta phase will first focus on three major areas: digital skills (such as coding languages), professional and entrepreneurial skills (such as how to establish a firm and conduct an effective interview), and personal passions (Photography). Following input from both authors and spectators, it plans to gradually extend these sections.

However, this launch comes at a time when demand for Indian edtech enterprises is declining as schools, universities, and physical tuition centres reopen, sending students back to conventional offline learning modes.

Falling demand for online learning, combined with a lack of funding, caused many edtech organisations to engage in extreme cost-cutting strategies such as mass layoffs, the closure of non-core verticals, and the cancellation of growth plans, among others.

Since the beginning of 2022, edtech businesses, including some of the most well-funded unicorns, such as Byju's, Unacademy, and Vedantu, have laid off roughly 10,000 staff.
