‘You’re privileged, not spoiled’: Farah Khan’s kids fly economy while she flies business class; here’s her parenting rule
Filmmaker Farah Khan shared her parenting philosophy on earning luxuries. She explained that her children fly economy while she travels business class. This teaches them the value of hard work and financial discipline. Khan believes children shoul...

While the rule may appear strict, Farah believes such boundaries can help children understand the value of money, hard work and privilege. She explained that her children have not yet earned the right to enjoy certain luxuries simply because their parents can afford them.
Here are four lessons from Farah Khan’s parenting approach:
1. Luxury should come with hard work
Farah believes children should understand that money is earned through hard work, discipline and dedication. She said her children should not assume that everything their parents own automatically belongs to them.By making them understand the effort behind financial success, parents can encourage children to learn budgeting and develop a sense of responsibility towards money.
2. Work towards the life you want
According to Farah, giving children everything they want can make them take luxuries for granted. Allowing them to experience some limitations can instead motivate them to work towards building the lifestyle they aspire to.The idea is to teach children that financial comfort is something they can create for themselves through consistency and hard work.
3. Understand the difference between being spoiled and privileged
Farah also highlighted the importance of teaching children to recognise their privilege. She recalled her son once telling her that he thought he was spoiled.Farah corrected him, telling him, “No, you're not spoiled. You are privileged.”
The distinction, she believes, can help children understand that the comforts they enjoy are the result of their parents' hard work and sacrifices.
4. Happiness does not always require luxury
Farah's approach also emphasises that children can enjoy themselves without expensive experiences. During long flights, for instance, her three children travel in economy but spend time together watching movies. For Farah, the shared experience and time spent as a family can be more meaningful than travelling in luxury.
