He was also the President of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA). He was the son of Dr. Surinder Kapur, founder of the Sona Group.

Sunjay Kapur was previously married to actress Karisma Kapoor. The two tied the knot in 2003 and parted ways in 2016. They shared two children, Samaira and Kiaan.
