Your safety depends on luck: How Delhi road digs are turning daily commutes into death traps

Open Pits, Poor Barricading
Uncovered pits, broken barricades and poorly marked construction zones are fast becoming a serious threat to commuters across Delhi and neighbouring areas. From busy arterial roads to residential stretches, unsafe digging work is putting pedestrians, cyclists and motorists at constant risk.

A recent incident in Noida has once again highlighted the danger. Earlier this month, a 27-year-old software engineer lost his life after his car plunged into a waterlogged under-construction site. The tragic accident has raised serious questions about safety compliance at roadwork sites.

Delhi's Alarming Ground Reality

According to a spot check conducted by TOI, several locations across Delhi continue to have open and unsecured construction areas with little to no safety arrangements.

At Lodhi Road, heaps of excavated soil were seen piled along the median. The area was marked only with loose green netting lying on the ground, offering almost no visual warning to approaching vehicles. The narrowed road space has made driving risky, especially during peak hours.

In Greater Kailash-I, a deep ditch running alongside the road was partially covered with plastic sheets. Water had collected along the edges, and the covering appeared weak and unstable. With no reflectors, warning lights or proper barricades, the site blends into the road at night, increasing the risk of accidents.

Water-Filled Pits and Poor Signage Raise Red Flags

At Sarai Kale Khan, a large pit dug for pipeline work was found filled with muddy water. The excavation was barely fenced off using metal sheets and netting. Vehicles passed dangerously close to the edge, and the lack of proper warning signs made the stretch particularly hazardous after dark or during rainfall.

Several other areas were found to have long, uncovered potholes with only thin plastic sheets placed over them. These coverings had shifted due to traffic and wind, leaving gaping holes exposed. In many cases, there were no cones, lights or reflective markers to alert commuters.

Delayed Work Worsens Safety Risks

In many locations, construction has remained incomplete for weeks due to restrictions or administrative delays. Temporary arrangements made during the initial digging phase have deteriorated over time, leaving pits open and unsafe.

Near the Pragati Maidan railway line, open drains and pipelines were seen running alongside the road, with vehicles squeezing past parked cars and construction material. The area lacked proper fencing, making it risky for both motorists and pedestrians.

Authorities Yet to Take Responsibility

The Public Works Department did not respond to queries regarding the absence of adequate safety measures at these sites. However, a traffic police official told TOI that it is the responsibility of the executing agency to ensure proper barricading and signage.

The official added that once work is completed, all temporary obstructions must be removed and the road restored immediately to prevent accidents and congestion.

Why This Is a Serious Public Safety Concern

Unsecured construction zones are not just an inconvenience, they are a major threat to life. Poor visibility, waterlogged pits and lack of warning signs can lead to skidding, vehicle damage and fatal accidents, especially during monsoon months or at night.

Urban experts have repeatedly stressed the need for stricter monitoring, better coordination between civic bodies and strict penalties for contractors who ignore safety norms.

Until stronger action is taken, commuters are urged to stay alert, avoid poorly lit roads at night, and report dangerous construction sites to local authorities.
