"You'll understand at my age": Bengaluru techie asks why boss bought Rs 1.5 crore flat instead of a bigger hometown house

The techie said his manager had recently purchased a flat in a gated community. After a team lunch, while being dropped home, he asked why the manager had not used the same amount to build a much larger independent house in his hometown.
According to the post, the manager simply smiled and replied, "You'll understand at my age."
The techie later turned to social media, asking whether independent houses were unavailable in Bengaluru within that budget or whether other factors had influenced his manager's decision.
He also noted that his manager's hometown is Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, which has major hospitals, including AIIMS, along with several reputed private hospitals, schools and colleges. The techie speculated that the decision may instead have been driven by better career opportunities in Bengaluru or the fact that his manager had lived in the city for nearly 12 years and had become comfortable there.
Social media users explain the decision
The post attracted several responses from users who said the choice was driven by practical considerations rather than the size of the property. Many pointed out that gated communities offer benefits such as security, maintenance, cleanliness, recreational amenities and a sense of community, which become increasingly important as people grow older and raise families.
Others said access to reputed hospitals, specialist doctors, schools and colleges often becomes a deciding factor, making metro cities more appealing despite higher housing costs.
Users cite property prices and career opportunities
Several commenters also highlighted Bengaluru's high land prices. One user wrote, "Even in remote #Bengaluru a 30 x 40 plot cost Rs.2 crore. Spend another 1 cr for building. That's why he's smiling."
Another user listed the reasons behind such decisions, saying people with children often prefer to stay in one place, job opportunities outside major cities may not be as reliable, and living close to schools, hospitals and other essential services becomes a priority.
The discussion resonated with many users, with several saying home-buying decisions are shaped by a combination of career prospects, family needs, convenience and long-term lifestyle considerations rather than the size of the house alone.
