India didn’t just win on Thursday night — they delivered one of their most complete batting performances in T20 World Cup history.
India piled up 256 for four against Zimbabwe, their highest-ever total in the tournament. They smashed 17 sixes, equalling their record for most sixes in a T20 World Cup innings. This went past the 15 sixes they had hit against Australia in Gros Islet in 2024. In this edition alone, India have now struck 63 sixes — their highest in a single World Cup — with only West Indies (66) ahead of them overall.

The intent from the batting unit stood out. All six Indian batters scored at a strike rate above 150. For the first time in T20 World Cup history, six or more players scored 20-plus runs at that pace in the same innings. India registered their highest opening partnership of the T20 World Cup 2026, surpassing the 25-run mark for the first time in six matchesIndia played only 26 dot balls in the entire 20 overs, equalling the fewest in a completed innings in the tournament. Abhishek Sharma led the charge. After returning from illness and scoring three ducks, he bounced back with a 26-ball fifty. Sanju Samson started fluently, Ishan Kishan kept up the momentum, and then Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma finished strongly. Pandya scored an unbeaten fifty, while Tilak, who had faced criticism over his strike rate, blasted 44 off just 16 balls at a strike rate of 275. Zimbabwe found a bright spot in Brian Bennett, who remained unbeaten on 97. It was the second-highest individual score against India in T20 World Cups after Chris Gayle’s 98 in 2010. Bennett smashed 26 runs in one over off Shivam Dube, who conceded 46 runs in his first two overs — the most by a bowler at that stage of a T20 World Cup match.
Overall, India responded strongly after their heavy defeat to South Africa. They attacked from the start, reduced dot balls, cleared the ropes consistently, and showed clear intent. The emphatic win kept their semifinal hopes alive and signalled a strong comeback.
