Year Ender 2023: Major natural disasters that took place this year

In 2023, our world bore witness to a series of catastrophic natural disasters that left a profound impact. From the powerful Hurricane Otis striking Mexico's coast to China grappling with unrelenting monsoons and Libya facing overwhelming floods, the year unfolded with immense challenges.

Turkey-Syria Earthquake: On February 6, southern Turkey had a big earthquake, measuring 7.8. Nine hours later, another strong quake of 7.5 hit the same place. These were the strongest earthquakes in over twenty years. They happened near Gaziantep, a region already dealing with problems because it hosts Syrian refugees.

China Floods: In late July, northeastern China experienced severe rainfall and flooding due to Typhoon Doksuri, resulting in historic rainfall in Beijing – exceeding 60% of its annual precipitation in just 83 hours. In August, China battled intensified monsoons and consecutive typhoons, with Typhoon Saola hitting southern China on September 2. These events necessitated the evacuation of over 880,000 individuals.


Morocco Earthquake: A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Morocco on September 8. It was centred in the Atlas Mountains near Marrakech. This earthquake, occurring at a depth of 18.5 km caused the loss of thousands of lives, numerous injuries, and widespread devastation.

Libya Floods: Eastern Libya faced the wrath of Mediterranean storm Daniel over a September weekend. It caused devastating floods that breached dams and wiped out entire neighbourhoods in several coastal towns. The aftermath claimed the lives of more than 4,300 people, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Himachal Rain Mayhem: Himachal Pradesh faced a challenging and tumultuous period dealing with severe weather conditions that resulted in destructive landslides, extensive damage, and the collapse of numerous buildings. The hilly state encountered a difficult two-month span, characterised by excessive rainfall in July and two unprecedented spells in August. This event stands as one of the most severe disasters in Himachal's history over the past century.

Hurricane Otis: On October 25, Hurricane Otis made landfall on Mexico's Pacific coast, standing out as one of the country's most formidable storms. The beautiful beach resort of Acapulco suffered extensive damage, running into billions of dollars.
