Yamuna Expressway Bus Fire: Set to marry in 2 months, IIT Delhi engineer dropped fiancée at bus station, followed her bus for 22 km; she promised to call from Orai, but never did

On Wednesday, September 23rd a tragic incident happened on Yamuna Expressway near Jewar in Greater Noida in which the bus catched fire leaving 9 dead. Out of those 9 dead in the fire a person named Shruti was also traveling to Orai in Jalun to celebrate her sister’s birthday. Little she and her fiancee Mohit Sharma knew that the bus would never reach its final destination.

Couple Was Set To Marry In November After 7 Months Of Dating

Shruti and Mohit were set to marry in November itself and they have been dating each other for the last 7 months. They met through a relative.

Mohit Dropped Shruti At Kashmere Gate, Followed Her Bus For 22 Km

Mohit came to drop Shruti at the Kashmere Gate, where she boarded the bus around 8:40 PM. Initially Mohit also wanted to go with Shruti but because of his work commitments he could not accompany her.

Couple Spoke For Nearly 50 Minutes Before Shruti Asked Him To Return

After dropping her off at the bus station and the bus started moving he followed the bus towards Noida while he was on a scooter. They were on the phone talking to each other for nearly 22 km while he was following the bus.

“In love, we cannot easily say goodbye to a person with whom we are connected,” Mohit told TOI.

For almost 50 minutes they continued to talk after that Shruti insisted him to go back. Around 10:19 PM Shruti once again called him to say good night and she also told Mohit she will call him tomorrow after reaching home. This was the last conversation they had.

Morning Calls Revealed The Yamuna Expressway Bus Fire

Around 6:30 in the morning Shruti’s sister reached the station to pick her up. Then from the bus operator the family got to know the bus had catched fire last night. Repeated calls from Shruti’s family woke Mohit up and left him searching for answers. His first stop was Kailash Hospital in Jewar, where he got the contact number of a witness, Utkarsh, and began trying to understand what had happened.

Mohit Searched Hospitals And Went From Place To Place Looking For Shruti

From there, Mohit went from one place to another in search of Shruti, holding on to the hope that he would receive confirmation that she was alive. At the Sector 94 post-mortem house, surrounded by families waiting to identify their loved ones, memories of the previous evening continued to haunt him. “The flashback of our memories and the time we spent is coming back and forth in my mind,” Mohit said.

His worst fears, however, soon came true. What he believed would be a temporary goodbye until their next call turned out to be their final moment together. Mohit is now tormented by the thought that he might have been able to prevent what happened. “I was also planning to go. Maybe I could have saved her,” he said.

Shruti worked as a project manager in an IT manager in Noida and Mohit is currently working on IIT’s Delhi Param Pragya Project, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
