The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed a female auctioneer to preside over the maiden Women's Premier League (WPL) player auction, which is due to take place on Monday in Mumbai. This is a watershed event for the BCCI since it is the first time a female auctioneer has been hired to oversee a big cricket auction in India. The WPL auction is going to be a thrilling occasion, with the top female cricket players in the country competing for the biggest bids.

Who is Mallika Sagar?

According to reports, the upcoming auction will be overseen by Mallika Sagar, a Mumbai-based art collector and consultant for Modern and Contemporary Indian art, as well as a partner in the Art India Consultants organisation. Notably, Mallika, an experienced auctioneer at Pundoles in Mumbai, recently performed the 2021 Pro Kabaddi League auctions.

The BCCI has also required that each side have a minimum of 15 players in its roster, with a minimum squad spend of Rs 9 crore. Each side would be given a Rs 12 crore budget, with a maximum of six international players permitted to be acquired.

The WPL Player Auction will include 409 players, with 246 being Indian cricketers and 163 being abroad players, including eight from associate nations.

Based on their specialities, the players will be classified into seven categories: marquee players, hitters, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers, spin bowlers, and rising players. Furthermore, for the auction, the players would be separated into five distinct slabs of base prices ranging from INR 10 lakh to INR 50 lakh.

The upcoming auction is attracting a lot of attention for the presence of several highly coveted players, including India's captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, all-rounder Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma who captained the U19 Women's T20 World Cup-winning team, Australia's top all-rounder Ellyse Perry, England's left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, New Zealand's captain Sophie Devine, and former West Indies player Deandra Dottin. All of these players have the highest base price.
