As the world marks World Press Freedom Day in 2024, it is vital to reflect on the sacrifices made by brave journalists who have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth. In India, the state of press freedom faces challenges, with the country ranking 161st out of 180 nations, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a French organization.
Among the journalists who tragically died while reporting in the field are Jagendra Singh, Rajdeo Ranjan, Tarun Mishra, and Gauri Lankesh.
Jagendra Singh, a freelance journalist from Uttar Pradesh, passed away from burn injuries after his house was set ablaze, allegedly by the police.
Rajdeo Ranjan, a journalist with the Hindustan newspaper in Siwan, Bihar, was fatally shot due to his coverage of criminal activities in the region.
Tarun Mishra, the bureau chief of Jan Sandesh Times newspaper in Uttar Pradesh, lost his life following reports exposing illegal mineral activities.
Gauri Lankesh, a prominent journalist and activist from Bangalore, was assassinated outside her residence in 2017 for her outspoken criticism of right-wing Hindu nationalism.
Global Journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty
Guillermo Cano Isaza was a Colombian journalist employed by El Espectador who was fatally shot by two hitmen while driving. As a tribute to his contributions, UNESCO recognized his legacy in 1997 by naming the press freedom prize after him, calling it the "Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize."
Daniel Pearl, an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped by Islamic militants in Karachi while attempting to interview Richard Ried, also known as the 'shoe bomber.' The group holding him, identifying themselves as the 'National movement for the restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty,' demanded the release of terrorist attackers in US custody for Pearl's freedom. After weeks of captivity, footage was released by his captors showing his brutal beheading and mutilation.
Daphne Caruana Galizia: An investigative journalist renowned for her work on the 'Panama Papers,' was a vocal critic of political corruption. Her blog, 'Running Commentary,' reflected her strong stance on these issues. She was tragically killed in a car bombing in October 2017.
Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya: An American Russian journalist was assassinated on October 7, 2006, when she was shot dead inside an elevator.
