World Day for International Justice 2022 – Know the history and significance of this occasion

Today is the World Day for International Justice. The day is also known as International Justice Day or the Day of International Criminal Justice. The event is observed across the globe every year to back and promote those people, who voice their support for the rights of the victims and against injustice.

History
On 17th July 1998, 120 countries around the world, signed a treaty, and as a result, the International Criminal Court (ICC) came into being. Twelve years later, on 1st June 2010, in a review conference held in Kampala, Uganda about the Rome Statute, it was decided by the participating nations that this day shall be observed as the World Day for International Justice. Out of 141 total countries, 121 nations were in favour, while 21 others, including the likes of Israel, the USA, China and Iraq, were against it.


Significance
The International Criminal Court (ICC), which is also known as world court, is the world's first permanent international criminal court. Typically, when the top court of a nation is unable to carry out the investigation and bring the culprit to justice, victims can appeal to the ICC. The victims can raise their voices on this international platform, which can be a good opportunity to highlight their issues globally.

The Day for International Criminal Justice is a stern warning to those people who are involved in serious war crimes. On this day, various campaigns and events take place around the world, and activists, journalists, and media help promote this day.
