Women cannot marry during course or face expulsion, Bihar nursing college order sparks outrage

A directive issued by Hathua General Nursing and Midwifery School in Gopalganj asking female students not to marry during the academic session has triggered controversy, with authorities cancelling the order and initiating further action, reports TOI.

The civil surgeon Dr Birendra Prasad told TOI that the notice has been annulled, stating that a student’s right to education cannot be restricted based on marital status. He said no such provision exists in health department or Nursing Council regulations. An inquiry report has been sent to higher authorities for further action against the principal.

Controversial notice triggers backlash

The issue surfaced after the institute released a notice on April 16 directing female students not to marry during their training period. It warned that those who married would have their names removed from the college rolls. The directive drew criticism from students, parents and on social media, with many questioning the institution’s authority to intervene in personal decisions.

Inquiry and administrative action

A two-member committee, comprising deputy medical superintendent Ramesh Kumar and medical officer in charge Avinash, visited the school to verify the order. Their findings were submitted to the civil surgeon, who forwarded the report to senior officials for further action.

Principal issues clarification

Responding to the criticism, principal Mansi Singh said the notice was not meant to impose a ban on marriage. She stated that frequent marriage-related requests were affecting attendance and academic schedules, as some students took extended leave after marriage.

The principal acknowledged that no official rule prohibits marriage during training and described the communication as an advisory intended to encourage students to focus on studies and maintain attendance. The notice has since been withdrawn.
