A woman in the United Kingdom is struggling to use her hands after developing a suspected allergy to nail products, according to a report by the New York Post. Lisa Dewey, 36, had been getting her nails done without any issues for years. However, after receiving a full set of gel polish in February, her nails became inflamed and started peeling away from the nail beds.

Initially, doctors believed the symptoms were caused by a bacterial infection and prescribed a steroid cream and antibiotics. When the signs of infection appeared to subside after taking the medication, Dewey decided to get acrylic nails in April. Unfortunately, the symptoms returned, and her nails became "very aggravated" once again.

Dewey described her skin as "tearing away like paper" from her fingers, causing excruciating pain and severely limiting her hand movement. Everyday tasks such as washing her daughter's hair, fastening a seatbelt, holding a pen, and washing dishes became challenging for her, as reported by the Independent. The condition has significantly impacted her confidence, leading her to constantly hide her hands

It is now suspected that Dewey has developed an allergy to nail products. Dermatologists have recently observed an increase in allergic reactions to acrylic and gel nails, according to a BBC report.

Methacrylate chemicals commonly used in these types of manicures are known to trigger contact allergies. The British Association of Dermatologists noted that these chemicals can cause severe and itchy rashes anywhere on the body, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact source of the reaction. Some individuals even report experiencing loose nails or nail loss.
