As per reports, the woman, Michelle Fairburn, had to be hospitalised after drinking four litres of water for 12 days as part of a viral fitness challenge.
The fitness challenge, 75 Hard, requires participants to drink about four litres of water for 75 days. The fitness programme was created in 2019 by a podcaster and CEO of a supplement company, Andy Frisella, who calls it 'an Ironman for your brain'. As per Frisella's website, 75 Hard is a transformative mental toughness programme, not a fitness programme.
However, the website also has a disclaimer warning participants to consult their doctor before proceeding. "You should consult your physician or other health care professional before starting 75 HARDTM or any other fitness programme to determine if it is right for your needs. Do not start 75 HARDTM if your physician or health care provider advises against it," reads the website.
"This is a program that can change your life, starting from the inside," reads the website page dedicated to the programme (https://andyfrisella.com/).
After starting the challenge, Fairburn felt nauseous and weak on the 12th day. In a TikTok video, she said that she couldn't eat and had woken up several times the night before.
Fairburn initially thought she had water poisoning, which is caused by excessive drinking of water and can be fatal. It generally occurs due to an electrolyte imbalance and has various symptoms, including disorientation, confusion, nausea, and vomiting.
However, after a series of tests, the doctor told her that she had a severe sodium deficiency.
However, the lady has not given up on the 75 Hard Challenge.
"I’m still going to do the 75-hour hard challenge; I’m not going to give up, but he says I have to drink less than half a litre of water a day. I cannot believe this is actually happening," she said.
