Woman develops snake-like skin after using 'pure herbal' cream: Doctor highlights serious health risks

A 40-year-old woman from China developed red and purple snake-like patterns across her body after using a “traditional Chinese medicine” cream for more than ten years without medical advice. The woman, identified by the pseudonym Tingting, was admitted to Zhongda Hospital Southeast University in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, in October, according to South China Morning Post.

When a quick fix turned into a long ordeal

As per the report, Tingting’s skin problems began about a decade ago, when she noticed red spots and itching on her lower right leg. The irritation spread across her body as she continued scratching. Desperate for relief, she found an ointment online claiming to be made from “pure traditional Chinese medicine” that could cure all skin conditions.

The cream initially eased her itching, convincing her to keep using it for years. Over time, she spent more than 100,000 yuan (around Rs 12.4 lakh) on the product. But the so-called remedy soon backfired, her skin condition worsened dramatically, and she began suffering from swelling, vomiting, nausea, and numbness in her hands.

Doctors find rare steroid-related side effects

As per the SCMP report, when Tingting arrived at the hospital, doctors were alarmed to find red, snake-like patterns running across her body. Her legs were swollen, and tests revealed her cortisol levels were dangerously low. The Doctor diagnosed a condition where the body fails to produce enough essential hormones.

“Many ‘herbal’ creams actually contain steroids”

Dr. Wang told the Yangtze Evening Post, “Many creams sold online, labelled ‘pure herbal’ or ‘steroid-free,’ actually contained powerful steroids.” He said his department frequently treats patients with similar complications.

According to him, steroids can provide quick relief from itching or rashes, but prolonged use leads to skin dependence and severe side effects. “These chemicals can enter the body through the skin, disrupting hormonal balance and potentially causing lasting health effects,” Dr. Wang warned.

Doctors urge caution over self-medication

Dr. Wang also advised that skin medications, especially those containing hormones, should only be used under a doctor’s supervision. Tingting’s case has since become a reminder about the risks of self-medicating with unverified “traditional” or “herbal” creams sold online.
