Woman allegedly cries for three hours after seat swap refusal
Travel blogger Tomiko Harvey recounted the incident in an Instagram post this week, describing what allegedly happened during a long-haul flight from Istanbul to Washington, DC. Harvey said she was travelling home after visiting Kazakhstan following her father's death when the encounter took place. In the video, Harvey is seen sitting beside a woman who appears visibly distressed. According to Harvey, the passenger repeatedly cried after she refused to give up her aisle seat so that the woman could sit closer to her husband.

Harvey said she eventually asked the woman whether someone had died, given how long she had been crying. The passenger reportedly told her that nobody had died and explained that she missed her husband and wanted to rest her head on his shoulder.
“She cried for 3 hours. I finally asked her if someone died, because who cries for 3 hours? She said nobody died. She just missed her husband, and whose shoulder would she lay her head on,” Harvey said.
Blogger questions expectations around changing seats
Harvey claimed that the woman's husband was seated in a middle seat two rows ahead and appeared to spend much of the flight sleeping with his headphones on.The incident led the blogger to question why some passengers expect strangers to give up their selected seats, particularly during long-haul journeys. She argued that travellers who want to sit beside their companions should arrange their seating in advance rather than rely on other passengers to accommodate them.
“What is wrong with people that they feel they can ask a stranger to switch seats, especially on a long-haul flight? Is it rude to refuse to switch seats on a plane? If you want to sit together, book together or pay for seat selection,” Harvey asked.
Harvey also described a sarcastic exchange after the aircraft landed in Washington, DC, saying she congratulated the woman for completing the 10-hour journey without sitting next to her husband.

Social media users react to the alleged incident
The blogger's account has prompted a range of reactions online, with several users backing her decision to keep her seat. Many argued that passengers should take responsibility for booking adjacent seats instead of expecting fellow travellers to change their plans. One user commented, “He made sure he had a peaceful fight, by himself.”
Another speculated, “Plot twist.. hubby booked the flights and seat selection. That mane needed a break!”
A third user remarked, “Husband ain’t look back once huh.”
Supporting Harvey's decision, another commenter wrote, “They should have booked their damn seats together. I’m with you 100%. Ain’t no way in hell I’m doing a middle seat if I don’t have to!”
A fifth user questioned the expectation that another passenger should give up a preferred seat, writing, “Can't survive a 10 hour flight without her husband but also won't pay to seat together. None of those sound like your problem.”
