The wolf supermoon will rise in the east around sunset on Friday and Saturday nights
The first full moon of 2026, also known as the wolf supermoon, will reach its full phase early on Saturday, January 3, 2026. January's Wolf Moon will be fullest tomorrow- meaning it will look a little larger and a little brighter. The Wolf Supermoon arrives as the first month of the New Year brings a rare supermoon event. The full moon will light up the sky from the night of January 2 till the early hours of January 3, making it a must-watch event for anyone interested in nature and space.

The wolf moon comes at the beginning of 2026 that will feature 13 full moons-including a blue moon, the closest supermoon since 2019 and the last “blood moon” total lunar eclipse until 2029. January's supermoon will be the first of three supermoons in 2026, with the other two coming at the end of the year.

Wolf Supermoon date and timings in US revealed

The wolf supermoon will rise in the east around sunset on Friday and Saturday nights, January 2-3 and by midnight it is expected to glow larger with a bright yellowish hue overhead before disappearing into the western horizon. The exact peak hits at 10:03 GMT. The full January supermoon will rise on the same weekend that the Quadrantids meteor shower peaks, capable of producing over 100 meteor fireballs per hour. The wolf moon will be technically full at 5:03 a.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 3, but as with all full moons.

A supermoon happens when the Moon reaches its full phase right around the time it’s closest to Earth. During this time, the Moon appears visibly bigger and more luminous in the sky.

Why is it called a supermoon?

The Moon’s orbit around Earth is elliptical rather than perfectly circular, which means its distance from the planet changes over time. When the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth, it is known as perigee. If this occurs during a full Moon, the phenomenon is referred to as a supermoon.

At perigee, the Moon is approximately 220,000 miles from Earth, compared to about 250,000 miles when it is at its farthest point, called apogee. This reduced distance makes the Moon appear noticeably larger and brighter in the night sky.

Wolf Moon Supermoon 2026 India timings

The Wolf Moon supermoon of 2026 will be seen in India's skies with an unusually large and bright full Moon from the night of January 2 through the early hours of January 3. It marks the first full Moon of the year and will be the last supermoon until November 2026.

Across India, the supermoon will be visible from moonrise on January 2 until pre-dawn on January 3. Although the Moon reaches peak full illumination at around 3:33 pm IST, it will be below the horizon at that time for Indian viewers.

The supermoon can be seen clearly without the use of telescopes or binoculars. Skywatchers are advised to find a spot with a clear view of the eastern horizon at sunset and limited light pollution. Observing the Moon close to moonrise or moonset may make it look larger and more dramatic.

The most striking views are expected shortly after moonrise between 5:45 pm and 6:00 pm IST, when the Moon appears larger and brighter near the eastern horizon due to the well-known “moon illusion.” Physicist Dr Michio Kaku explains that this illusion occurs because the human eye perceives objects near the horizon differently than those overhead.

Colour, planets and celestial sights

As the Wolf Moon rises, it may appear golden or orange, a result of its light passing through a thicker layer of Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters blue wavelengths and allows red and orange hues to dominate. As the Moon climbs higher, it typically shifts back to a brighter white.

The night sky will offer more than just the supermoon. Jupiter will shine close to the Moon and be easily visible to the naked eye, while Saturn will appear in the southwestern sky around moonrise. The Orion constellation will stand out prominently, and despite the bright moonlight, the Quadrantid meteor shower, peaking between January 2 and 3, may still produce occasional bright fireballs.

Best time to watch wolf supermoon

Astronomers recommend observing the Moon around sunset and sunrise for the most dramatic views. According to NASA, the Moon appears especially large near the horizon due to the moon illusion, even though its actual size remains unchanged. Its colour also adds to the spectacle—bright white overhead and warm orange when low in the sky—caused by atmospheric scattering as moonlight travels through more air near the horizon.

When is the next full moon? Full moon January 2026

The next full moon will be the January wolf supermoon, set to rise, Saturday, Jan 3, with peak illumination at 5:03 a.m. ET. It will rise low on the horizon and like the December cold moon, it will rise around the same time for several nights.
