Will piped gas supply be affected amid LPG cylinder shortage? Top PNG supplier breaks silence on Iran-Israel war fallout
Piped Gas Supply: As the Iran-Israel conflict chokes the Strait of Hormuz—disrupting nearly 90% of India's LPG and LNG imports—the government has mandated that Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for households be treated as a top-tier priority. While industr...

How is the Government protecting your piped gas supply?
To prevent a domestic energy crisis, the Centre has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, giving it the power to override existing commercial contracts. Under this order, Priority Sector I—which includes domestic PNG for households and CNG for transport—is guaranteed 100% of its past six-month average consumption. This means that as long as gas is operationally available in the national grid, it must be funneled to kitchen pipes before it can be sent to factories or power plants. What are gas distributors saying?
In Madhya Pradesh, Manish Verma, marketing head of Aavantika Gas Limited, told TOI that while the cost of procuring gas has surged due to the war, "Domestic PNG supply will largely remain unaffected and continuity will be maintained.". Verma emphasized that while industrial gas (ING) faces a price hike and supply pressure, household pipes in Indore, Gwalior, and Ujjain remain a priority. Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh, Praveen Singh, DGM Marketing of Green Gas Limited, told TOI that his company is "currently meeting 100% of PNG demand" in Lucknow and Agra, urging consumers to remain calm as stocks are sufficient. Is there any risk of PNG being cut off for domestic users?
For most residents, the supply will remain uninterrupted; however, distributors are tightening enforcement on billing. Aavantika Gas has told TOI that if supply constraints tighten further, gas will first be cut for those domestic and industrial consumers who have long-standing outstanding bills. Beyond payment issues, the Ministry has tasked GAIL (India) Limited with managing a "pooled price" mechanism to ensure that even diverted gas remains affordable for essential priority sectors like home kitchens. Why are industrial PNG users facing supply cuts?
While homes are protected, the industrial sector is bearing the brunt of the import disruption. Adani Total Gas Limited recently informed stock exchanges that some of its Middle East suppliers have curtailed deliveries, forcing a reduction in supply to industrial customers. Under the new government mandate, manufacturing units and tea industries will only receive 80% of their average consumption, while petrochemical facilities may face even deeper cuts. This tiered system ensures that essential food services and household cooking are not interrupted by the global logistical bottleneck at the Strait of Hormuz. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
