'Why let people fight for your house': Anupam Kher gives unique reason for not owning a home even after 500+ films
Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has chosen to live his life in rented accommodations, prioritizing philanthropy and financial prudence over property ownership. Despite a successful career, Kher believes in using his wealth for good, fulfilling his mot...

He shared his unique perspective in an interview with The Curly Tales, explaining that he prefers to save money rather than invest in real estate. "I live in a rented apartment, because I decided I don’t want to own a house. Kiske liye (for whom)? Pay the rent every month and live. The money that you will buy a house for, keep it in your bank account and use that to pay your rent instead," he shared.
A Choice Driven by Practicality and Purpose
Kher believes in prioritizing philanthropy over property ownership, aspiring to leave a legacy of giving. He expressed that it's more meaningful to ensure one's wealth is put to good use rather than bequeathing a tangible property for heirs to contest. Interestingly, Kher did fulfill his mother's dream of owning a home by buying her an eight-bedroom house in Shimla after she lived her life in rental spaces. "I was teasing her seven years ago... but she instantly said, 'I want a house in Shimla,'" Kher recounted. Although his mother initially asked for just a two-bedroom house, he gifted her a more spacious home where she now resides. The actor noted that, in his view, property ownership isn't essential, and he prefers to put his earnings to charitable uses. He emphasized that he would rather contribute to society than own real estate, highlighting the importance of creating a lasting impact through other means. "It’s better to give after you go many years later and to distribute the money rather than people fighting for your house," Kher stated.
Meanwhile, Kher's latest film, Vijay 69, is currently streaming on Netflix, receiving a mixed reception from audiences and critics. His wife, Kirron Kher, a respected actress and politician, owns a house in Chandigarh. Published by Vineeta Kumar on November 11, 2024.
