Born in Leeds, England, Erling Haaland grew up in Norway and has represented the Scandinavian nation throughout his international football career
Erling Haaland is one of the biggest names in world football, scoring goals at a remarkable rate for Manchester City and leading Norway's attack at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Yet one question continues to surface whenever he shines on the international stage: If he was born in England, why doesn't he play for the Three Lions?

The answer lies in his family background, upbringing and the path he chose long before becoming one of football's most feared strikers.

Is Erling Haaland British?

Although Haaland was born in Leeds, England, on July 21, 2000, he represents Norway because of his nationality and upbringing.

His father, Alfie Haaland, was playing for Leeds United in the Premier League when Erling was born. Alfie later joined Manchester City before retiring from professional football in 2003. Haaland's mother, Gry Marita Braut, is also Norwegian and was a successful heptathlete.

After Alfie retired, the family moved back to Norway while Erling was still a young child. He spent almost his entire childhood there, attending school and developing his football career in Norway.

Why was Haaland eligible to play for Norway?

Under FIFA rules, a player's international eligibility is determined by several factors, including nationality, parentage and place of birth.

Because both of Haaland's parents are Norwegian, he was always eligible to represent Norway. His birth in England also made him eligible to play for England, but he never pursued that option.

Instead, Haaland progressed through Norway's youth teams before making his senior international debut in September 2019. Having played in official competitive matches for Norway, he became permanently tied to the national team under FIFA regulations.

Why did Haaland choose Norway over England?

For Haaland, the decision went beyond eligibility. Norway is where he grew up, learned the game and built his football career.

He represented Norway at every youth level before breaking into the senior team, making his commitment to the country clear well before he became a global star with Manchester City.

Haaland's impact on Norwegian football

Haaland has gone on to become Norway's all-time leading goalscorer while still in his mid-twenties. His prolific scoring record has transformed the national team's fortunes and reignited hopes of success on the international stage.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he has once again demonstrated his importance by leading Norway's attack with a series of standout performances, helping the team reach the knockout rounds for the first time since 1998.

Could Haaland have played for England?

Technically, yes. Since he was born in England, Haaland was eligible to represent the Three Lions.

However, his footballing identity was shaped entirely in Norway. Having grown up there, progressed through the country's youth system and made his senior debut in 2019, his international future was effectively decided long before he emerged as one of the world's best strikers.

Today, Haaland remains the face of Norwegian football. While England can only wonder what might have been, Norway continues to benefit from the talents of a player who has always considered the Scandinavian nation his footballing home.
