New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the opening of the city's 2026 outdoor pool season on Saturday by diving into a public pool in East Harlem while wearing a full suit and tie, reviving a long-standing City Hall tradition that had not taken place in more than a decade.

Mamdani jumped into the Thomas Jefferson Pool on East 114th Street alongside Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura. His ceremonial plunge also technically breached the pool's dress code, as noted by the New York Post.

First mayoral plunge in more than a decade

Mamdani became the first New York City mayor since 2013 to participate in the annual pool-opening tradition. The ritual had not been observed during the administrations of Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio, with Michael Bloomberg being the last mayor to take part.

Earlier this year, Mamdani had indicated that he "may commit" to reviving the tradition when asked about it by City reporter Katie Honan.

Mayor jokes about suit after dive

After the ceremony, Mamdani reposted the New York Post's report on X along with a video of the dive, joking, "When they said 'wear a suit,' I just assumed..."

Following the plunge, the mayor greeted residents gathered at the pool before highlighting another milestone for the city.

"We're so excited to be celebrating 90 years of public swimming in our city," Mamdani told reporters while still wearing his soaked suit. "This is a moment that New Yorkers are celebrating across the five boroughs."

Celebrating 90 years of public swimming

The anniversary dates back to 1936, when then Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia oversaw a major expansion of New York City's public swimming facilities.

Supported by then President Franklin D Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration, the initiative led to the opening of 11 new public pools across the city. The facilities became known for their distinctive architecture and advanced chlorination and filtration systems and continue to serve New Yorkers nearly nine decades later.
