Entrepreneur Subroto Bagchi recently shared a photograph of his last salary cheque on social media. He served as the Chief Advisor to the Government of Odisha for Institution and Capacity Building.

In his post, Bagchi reflected on what he values most. “What is the biggest wealth in this one life that I would never ever part with? Well, for every year of the work I did with the government, the deal was that they paid me Re 1. For the 8 years out there, I got 8 cheques and this one here was my last salary drawn,” he wrote. The cheque, issued by the State Bank of India, was dated 3 July 2024.

From corporate boardrooms to public service

Bagchi is best known as the co-founder of Mindtree, an IT and consulting firm recognised globally for its innovation and leadership. Over the years, he and his wife Susmita have donated hundreds of crores towards causes such as cancer care, education, and skill development.

Despite his financial success, Bagchi treasures the Re 1 cheque above all. It represents eight years of quiet, selfless service to his home state, a commitment made without expectation of financial reward.

In 2016, Bagchi became chairman of the Odisha Skill Development Authority. He also served as the chief spokesperson for the state government during the COVID-19 pandemic. These roles were not about money but about making a difference.
