Who was Mukarram Jah? The last Nizam of Hyderabad passes away in Turkey at 89

Mukarram Jah, the titular 8th and last Nizam of Hyderabad, passed away suddenly on January 12 at the age of 89 in Istanbul, Turkey.

He was formally called Nizam Mir Barkat Ali Khan Siddiqi Mukarram Jah, Asaf Jah VIII. He was born in France in 1933 to Prince Azam Jah and Ottoman Empire imperial princess Durrushehvar. He later moved to Turkey after spending time in the Australian outback.

He attended the Doon School in Dehradun as well as prestigious institutions in London and Cambridge, England. Additionally, he was a graduate of the London School of Economics.


Following the demise of Mir Osman Ali Khan in February 1967, Jah was crowned Asaf Jah the Eighth on April 6, 1967.

Jah had five marriages and seven children.

His net worth was said to have been close to $1 billion, but it fell after he parted with a few possessions as part of a divorce settlement in the 1990s. Additionally, he owned multiple famous places: Chowmahalla Palace, Naukhanda Palace, Falaknuma Palace, the Chiraan Palace, Purani Haveli and Nazri Bagh Palace.

Jah’s dead remains will be kept in Hyderabad's Chowmahalla Palace on Tuesday with the family's permission. His children planned to visit Hyderabad on January 17, 2023, carrying his dead remains in accordance with his wish to be buried in his own country.
