In a shocking broad daylight killing that has rocked the posh Model Town area of Jalandhar, Lucky Oberoi, a local Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) functionary, was shot dead outside a gurdwara on Friday morning. The brazen attack took place around 7:55 AM, shortly after Oberoi had stepped out of the Gurdwara Singh Sabha and was seated inside his black Thar SUV.

Who was Lucky Oberoi?

Lucky Oberoi was a resident of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar and a well-known face in Jalandhar’s political and business circles. A financier by profession, he was also heavily involved in the local property market. Within the Aam Aadmi Party, Oberoi was considered a key figure and was known to be very close to Rajwinder Thiara, the party’s in-charge for the Jalandhar Cantt constituency. His family was equally active in local politics; his wife, Simarjot Kaur, had contested the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation elections last year on an AAP ticket.

How Lucky Oberoi's murder unfolded?

The assailants appeared to have tracked Oberoi's daily routine, as he was a frequent visitor to the gurdwara. As he sat in his vehicle, at least two unidentified attackers arrived on a scooter and opened fire from point-blank range. According to reports from the Times of India and PTI, the shooters fired roughly 5 to 8 rounds, shattering the vehicle's windows and leaving Oberoi with critical injuries to his chest and head. Despite being rushed immediately to a nearby private hospital, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after.

Why was Lucky Oberoi shot dead?

While a definitive motive has not yet been confirmed by the police, investigators are currently looking into several angles. Given Oberoi’s work as a financier and property dealer, police are investigating if the hit was a result of a financial dispute or a "deal gone wrong" in the high-stakes real estate sector. As a prominent AAP functionary, the possibility of political enmity is being thoroughly examined, especially as opposition parties have already begun citing the incident as a sign of "collapsing law and order" in Punjab. Senior police officers have formed specialized teams to scan CCTV footage from the Model Town area to trace the scooter’s path and identify the shooters.

The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate has cordoned off the crime scene and deployed forensic teams to collect evidence. For now, the city remains on high alert as authorities search for the bike-borne killers.
