Fricker made history in 1990 when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying Bridget Fagan Brown, the devoted mother of Christy Brown, in the 1989 biographical drama My Left Foot. Her emotionally powerful performance opposite Daniel Day-Lewis, who won Best Actor for playing Christy Brown, cemented her place as one of Ireland's finest actors.
For many audiences worldwide, Fricker was also fondly remembered as the compassionate "Pigeon Lady" in the 1992 holiday classic Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Sharing some of the film's most heartfelt scenes with Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McCallister, her character became one of the movie's most enduring and beloved figures.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker began her acting career in theatre before moving into television and film. She appeared in Coronation Street in 1977 and David Hare's Play for Today production Licking Hitler in 1978. She later became one of the original cast members of the BBC's long-running medical drama Casualty, playing nurse Megan Roach from its debut in 1986. Though she left the regular cast in 1990, she returned for guest appearances, with her final episode airing in 2010.
Throughout her career, Fricker built an impressive body of work across film, television and theatre, earning praise for bringing warmth, authenticity and emotional depth to every role. She also appeared alongside Cate Blanchett in Veronica Guerin, the acclaimed drama based on the life of the murdered Irish investigative journalist.
Earlier this year, Fricker received the Freedom of the City of Dublin, one of the Irish capital's highest civic honours, recognising her contribution to the arts. In 2025, she published her autobiography, She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, in which she candidly wrote about her childhood, struggles with sexual violence and mental health, and her journey through life and acting. The memoir became a bestseller in Ireland.
Following her death, tributes poured in from across Ireland and the entertainment industry. Her agent, Phil Belfield, described her as a once-in-a-generation talent, saying, "We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her." Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris also called her a "national treasure" and one of the country's greatest cultural ambassadors.
From her Oscar-winning performance in My Left Foot to her unforgettable role in Home Alone 2, Brenda Fricker leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances that continue to resonate with audiences around the world.
