Who is Summer McIntosh?

Summer McIntosh is a Canadian swimmer widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in world sport. Born in Toronto, she has been breaking records and winning major international titles since her early teens. At present, she owns the world record in four events — the 200m and 400m individual medleys, the 400m freestyle and the 200m fly.

She is the first swimmer to hold four individual long-course world records simultaneously since Swede Sarah Sjostrom held the 50m and 100m fly and 50m and 100m free world records from 2017 to 2024, according to NBC.

The daughter of former Canadian Olympic swimmer Jill Horstead, McIntosh grew up around the sport and quickly established herself as a prodigy. At just 14 years old, she became the youngest member of Canada's swimming team for the Tokyo Olympics, which were held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite her young age, she impressed on the global stage by finishing fourth in the women's 400-meter freestyle.

Competing against some of the biggest names in swimming, the then-15-year-old captured gold medals in the 200-meter butterfly and 400-meter individual medley. She also won silver in the 400-meter freestyle behind American swimming legend Katie Ledecky.

Just weeks later, she continued her dominance at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she collected six medals, including gold in both the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley events.

Summer McIntosh 200 fly dominance continues

The 200-meter butterfly has become one of McIntosh's signature events.

She first won world championship gold in the race in 2022 and successfully defended her title in subsequent editions of the championships. Her ability to combine endurance, speed and technical precision has made her the swimmer to beat in the event.

That dominance reached a new level at the Canadian Trials when she broke the world record that had stood for nearly 16 years.

Her time of 2:01.65 is now the fastest ever recorded in the women's 200-meter butterfly in a long-course (50-meter) pool.

Olympic success and growing legacy

McIntosh cemented her status as a global superstar at the Paris Olympics.

The Canadian swimmer won three Olympic gold medals, including the 200-meter butterfly, while also securing a silver medal in the highly competitive 400-meter freestyle.

Her silver-medal race drew significant attention as it featured a showdown with Australian champion Ariarne Titmus and American great Katie Ledecky, two of the most accomplished swimmers of their era.

By the age of 19, McIntosh had already achieved more than many swimmers accomplish in an entire career.

Training under legendary coach Bob Bowman

In a move aimed at taking her career to even greater heights, McIntosh relocated to Texas last year to train under renowned coach Bob Bowman, best known for guiding swimming icon Michael Phelps.

At only 19 years old, Summer McIntosh is already an Olympic champion, multiple-time world champion and world-record holder. If her latest performance in the 200 fly is any indication, the Canadian star may only be getting started.
