For Battalion Under Officer Sparsh Chhetri of Dehradun, joining the Indian Army represents both a personal decision and the continuation of a four-generation family association with military service. An Indian Army training command recently shared a post on social media highlighting Sparsh’s journey, which combines a technology education, corporate experience, sporting achievements and military training.

From Computer Science graduate to Army officer aspirant

Sparsh did not begin his professional journey in the Armed Forces. He studied Computer Science at Thapar University and later built a corporate career as a Senior Data Analyst with a leading multinational company.


The role offered him the stability and opportunities associated with a growing technology career. Yet, the prospect of serving in uniform remained strong, shaped in large part by the environment in which he grew up.

For Sparsh, the Army was not an unfamiliar profession. Military service had been part of his family history across generations, and the values associated with the uniform were familiar from an early age.

Four generations of military service

The connection to the Armed Forces in Sparsh’s family stretches back to his great-grandfather, who served in the British Indian Army.

His grandfather and father subsequently carried the tradition forward as Infantry officers, while his mother served in the Army Educational Corps.

Growing up with four generations of military service behind him exposed Sparsh from childhood to ideas of discipline, courage, duty and commitment. The uniform represented more than a profession in his household. It was part of the family’s identity.

Sparsh’s own decision adds another chapter to that history, while giving him the opportunity to establish an identity based on his own achievements.

A sporting record across multiple disciplines

His profile is not limited to academics and professional experience. Sparsh has also competed across several sports.

He became a national-level medal winner in equestrian sport and earned district-level medals in badminton and swimming.

His achievements also include recognition as a Best Firer, highlighting his proficiency in an important military skill.

Before entering officer training, Sparsh had another connection to the Armed Forces through the National Cadet Corps.

Leadership role at OTA Gaya

At the Officers Training Academy Gaya, Sparsh took on important cadet responsibilities, including the appointment of Battalion Under Officer. The position places significant responsibility on an officer cadet and involves leadership, coordination, teamwork and maintaining discipline among fellow cadets.

His earlier experience in NCC and competitive sport provided a foundation for handling such responsibilities. At the same time, his academic and professional background added another dimension to his profile.

The appointment also reflected the confidence placed in his leadership abilities during his training.

A new chapter in a long family tradition

Sparsh now represents the latest generation of a family whose relationship with the Armed Forces spans four generations.

From his great-grandfather’s service in the British Indian Army to the Infantry careers of his grandfather and father, and his mother’s contribution through the Army Educational Corps, the military has remained a recurring part of the family’s history.
