A brief breakup, a TV dating show and a reunion

At one point, Marie-France Van Heel and Andy Burnham briefly separated. During that period, Van Heel appeared on the popular television dating programme Blind Date, becoming a familiar face to viewers in the 1990s with her distinctive bob hairstyle and flared trousers.

An acquaintance once told The Guardian: "It's a partnership, but I can't see her glad-handing at summits." The person added: "She won't be interested in moving to London."

Marie-France Van Heel built an impressive marketing career

While many know her primarily as Andy Burnham's wife, Marie-France Van Heel has established an accomplished career in marketing and business strategy.

Over the years, she has held senior roles with well-known companies including Sky Digital and MTV Europe, gaining extensive experience in branding, communications and corporate strategy.

More recently, she joined a Manchester-based electric vehicle charging company, where her work received industry-wide recognition. According to her business profile, she was named the region's best marketing professional for her contributions to the company.

Marie-France Van Heel's deeply personal breast cancer journey

One of the most emotional chapters in Marie-France Van Heel's life relates to her family's long history of breast cancer. Her grandmother, mother and sister all died from the disease.

After discovering she carried a gene mutation linked to breast cancer risk, Marie-France Van Heel chose to undergo a preventative double mastectomy in 2010.

Earlier this year, while raising money for Cancer Research, she explained the heartbreaking reason behind her decision. "Breast cancer runs in my family and has taken the lives of my gran, mum and sister."

Her decision has since been widely praised as one made after years of witnessing the devastating impact of the disease on her family.

The story behind Andy Burnham's campaign logo

One lesser-known fact about Marie-France Van Heel is her involvement in Andy Burnham's political branding. She reportedly helped create Burnham's distinctive cartoon-style campaign logo, which became a recognisable part of his public image during election campaigns.

Although she has rarely taken centre stage in politics, her creative contribution reflected her professional marketing expertise.

Social media controversy during Burnham's campaign

During Andy Burnham's Makerfield campaign, Marie-France Van Heel unexpectedly became the subject of online misinformation. Posts circulating on social media questioned her executive position at Iduna, a company involved in Manchester's electric vehicle charging network.

Some users falsely claimed Burnham had favoured the company in awarding contracts.

However, as Greater Manchester mayor, Burnham had already declared the potential conflict of interest through the appropriate official channels. The claims shared online were not supported by evidence.

Andy Burnham spoke openly about his wife's decision

Andy Burnham has previously discussed how difficult the period was for both of them. Speaking in 2012 while serving as Labour's health spokesperson, he described the surgery as emotionally challenging but ultimately life-changing.

He said the decision had been: "hard" but also "liberating" because it "lifted the cloud of fear".

Burnham also explained the motivation behind his wife's decision, saying: "She did what she did because she'd seen the devastation breast cancer had caused to her sisters and mother."
