Sussex record at just 16
Coles made headlines in 2020 when he became Sussex's youngest-ever first-class debutant at the age of 16 years and 157 days. Making his debut in the Bob Willis Trophy against Surrey at The Oval, he impressed immediately by dismissing Rory Burns, Ben Foakes and Jamie Smith, finishing with match figures of 3 for 35. A product of Sussex's player development partnership with the Oxfordshire Cricket Board, Coles attended Magdalen College School in Oxford before signing his first professional contract with Sussex in 2021. He soon progressed through England's age-group setup, representing the Under-19 side against the West Indies, touring Sri Lanka and featuring in the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup.
Domestic record that caught England's attention
Coles' breakthrough at senior level came in 2023 when he scored his maiden first-class century against Glamorgan. His biggest domestic season came in 2025. Playing in Sussex's return to Division One of the County Championship, Coles scored four centuries and crossed the 1,000-run mark in a first-class season for the first time. He also strengthened his white-ball credentials by helping Sussex reach the Vitality Blast Finals Day before joining Southern Brave as a wildcard pick in The Hundred.
