A video showing a New Zealand cricketer getting emotional during the T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad has gone viral on social media.

The player in the clip has been identified as Ish Sodhi. In the video, Sodhi appears visibly emotional while the New Zealand national anthem is being played before the start of the match.

Sharing the clip online, a social media user wrote: “Meet Ish Sodhi. Born in India. Didn’t get opportunities in cricket here, moved to New Zealand to pursue the sport. During the New Zealand national anthem, he was emotional, possibly remembering his roots. Patriotism doesn’t come from priority, it flows in the blood.”

All about Ish Sodhi

Inderbir Singh “Ish” Sodhi, born on October 31, 1992, is a New Zealand international cricketer who represents the national team across formats. A right-arm leg-spin bowler and right-handed batter, Sodhi has been a key part of New Zealand’s limited-overs setup.

Sodhi made his Twenty20 International debut against the West Indies in July 2014 and played his first One Day International for New Zealand against Zimbabwe on August 2, 2015.

In January 2018, Sodhi rose to the No. 1 spot in the ICC rankings for T20I bowlers after a strong run of performances. He was also part of the New Zealand squad that finished runners-up at the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Interestingly, Sodhi has also enjoyed considerable success against India in the shortest format. The spinner holds the record for the most T20I wickets by a New Zealand bowler against India. In 25 matches, he has taken 30 wickets at an average of 23.80.
