The Mexican army has killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, better known as El Mencho, the feared head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in a major blow to organised crime networks. The killing has not only triggered a strong reaction from the cartel but has also brought fresh attention to his family, especially his daughter Jessica Johanna Oseguera Gonzalez, who has previously served time in a US jail for her role in the cartel’s financial dealings.

Jessica Johanna Oseguera Gonzalez, 39, is widely known by the alias “La Negra”. She is the daughter of El Mencho and Rosalinda González Valencia, whose family, Los Cuinis, runs the financial wing of CJNG.

Born in San Francisco in the United States, Jessica holds dual citizenship of the US and Mexico. She later moved to Mexico during her school years and went on to study marketing at a university in Guadalajara.


Her life came under international scrutiny as authorities tracked financial networks linked to CJNG.

Why El Mencho's daughter Jessica Johanna Oseguera Gonzalez was jailed in the US?

Jessica Johanna Oseguera was arrested in February 2020 in Washington, DC. She had travelled from Mexico to attend her brother’s criminal hearing when US authorities took her into custody.

She faced five counts of “Engaging in Transactions or Dealings in Properties of a Designated Foreign Person” as a member of Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion. She pleaded guilty to all five counts.

In 2021, a US court sentenced her to 30 months in prison for “willfully engaging in financial dealings with Mexican companies that had been identified as specially designated narcotics traffickers”.

She served about 25 months and was released early in 2022.

On the morning of her arrest, Jessica had received the ash cross marking the beginning of Lent. Family and friends have described her as deeply religious.

At the same time, reports said she was wearing luxury items — a Rolex watch, a Louis Vuitton coat and an Hermès bag — when she was detained, reflecting the wealth linked to cartel operations.

El Mencho's family

Jessica is one of three children of El Mencho. Her brother Rubén Oseguera González, also known as “El Menchito”, and sister Laisha Oseguera are also part of the extended family network that investigators have long watched.

El Mencho was married to Rosalinda González Valencia in 1996. The couple reportedly separated legally in 2018, but the wider family links continued to play a role in CJNG’s structure.

With the cartel leader now dead, attention is shifting to his inner circle and family members who could influence the next phase of CJNG.

Security experts expect a period of instability within the cartel and possible retaliation following his killing.
