Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited the Shri Vinayaka Mandir in Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar and offered prayers to Lord Ganesha as he completed 25 years as the head of a government. Modi began this journey on October 7, 2001, when he took oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The Prime Minister performed rituals at the temple and prayed for the happiness, prosperity and good health of people across the country. He also sought the blessings of Lord Ganesha, traditionally known as Vighnaharta, or the remover of obstacles. In a post on X, Modi said he had performed worship and rituals at the Shri Vinayak Temple in New Delhi and prayed for the welfare of people across the country. He added that he hoped the blessings of Vighnaharta would bring welfare to all and that India would continue on its path of progress.

Where is the temple visited by PM Modi?

The Shri Vinayaka Mandir is located in Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi. Its official address is Sree Vinayaka Mandir Marg, AB Block, Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi 110023. The temple is in the South Delhi neighbourhood that is also known for the Sarojini Nagar market.

The temple is commonly known as Sree Vinayaka Mandir and is dedicated to Lord Vinayaka, another name for Lord Ganesha. The temple's official website says it was established to serve the South Indian community living in Delhi and provide a place where traditional pujas, rituals and ceremonies could be performed.

When was the Vinayaka Mandir built?

The history of the temple goes back to the early 1950s. According to the temple committee, members of Delhi's South Indian community felt the need for a dedicated temple in the national capital. A committee was subsequently formed and registered in Delhi in April 1953. A small temple with a sanctum for Lord Vinayaka was later built with public contributions. The idol of Sree Siddhi Buddhi Sametha Karpaga Vinayakar, sculpted by traditional temple artisans from South India, was consecrated on August 24, 1961 in what was then known as Vinay Nagar, now Sarojini Nagar. Over the years, the temple complex expanded and additional deities and facilities were added. The temple's history records the installation of Lord Anjaneya and the Navagrahas, while a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva was later consecrated in 1983.
