The cast of Shaakuntalam includes the lead Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the titular role of Shakuntala and Dev Mohan as King Dushyanta. The film also stars Prakash Raj, Mohan Babu, Allu Arha, Sachin Khedekar, Gautami, Aditi Balan, Madhoo, Ananya Nagalla, Kabir Bedi, Jisshu Sengupta, Kabir Duhan Singh, Varshini Sounderajan, Harish Uthaman, Subbaraju, Aadarsh Balakrishna, and Yash Puri.

Shaakuntalam was reportedly made at a budget of Rs 65 crore, but could manage to collect only Rs 20 crore at the box office. It was considered a flop at the box office.

The mythological romantic drama film Shaakuntalam is based on the epic novel Shakuntala by writer Kalidasa. In the story, Shakuntala, the daughter of Vishwamitra and Menaka, falls in love with King Dushyanta and gets married to him. But Dushyanta does not remember Shakuntala due to the curse of sage Durvasa Maharshi. The story culminates when the couple is reunited.
