Diwali 2024 date confusion
In 2024, there was some debate regarding the exact date of Diwali. The Amavasya Tithi spans both October 31 and November 1, which caused confusion about when the festival should be observed. A meeting of over 100 astrologers and religious scholars, called the 'Deepawali Nirnay Dharmasabha,' was held at Central Sanskrit University in Jaipur to resolve the issue. They confirmed that October 31 is the more suitable date for Diwali celebrations, as the Amavasya Tithi fully covers the Pradosh Kaal on this day. Also Read: Dhanteras 2024 Date, Shubh Muhurat Time
The scholars highlighted that the period after sunset, known as Pradosh Kaal, is critical for performing Laxmi Puja. On October 31, this time frame lasts from 5:12 PM to 7:43 PM, making it ideal for the ritual. On November 1, the Amavasya Tithi ends at 6:16 PM, limiting the Pradosh Kaal and making it less favorable for the worship.
Professor Arknath Chaudhary, former vice-chancellor of Somnath Sanskrit University, stated in an interview with Dainik Bhaskar, "According to the Rajmartand Granth, Laxmi Puja should be performed on Chaturdashi mixed Amavasya. Based on this principle, Diwali can only be celebrated on October 31, 2024."
