The unusual incident occurred on September 27 when a local farmer named Ramhari Bhoyar brought fresh soybean beans from his farm. His wife, Geetabai, placed her heavy gold chain on a plate containing soybean shells. Unbeknownst to the family, the buffalo was offered the shells as fodder the next morning.
Realizing the gold chain was missing, the family initially suspected theft. However, they soon discovered that the buffalo had ingested the chain along with the soybean shells. They promptly took the buffalo to the local veterinary doctor, Dr. Dnyaneshwar Idhole, who advised them to consult Dr. Balasaheb Koundinya, an experienced veterinary surgeon in Washim.
Dr. Koundinya and his team used a metal detector to confirm the presence of metal inside the buffalo's stomach and conducted sonography to pinpoint its exact location. Following a surgical procedure, they successfully retrieved the gold chain on September 29.
Dr. Koundinya noted that while it's common to perform surgeries on domestic animals that ingest hazardous items in urban areas, this case was unique as they managed to recover a gold chain worth Rs 2.5 lakh. The farmer, along with his buffalo and the recovered gold chain, returned to the village on September 30, leaving the villagers amazed at the bizarre yet successful outcome of the incident.
