WhatsApp is positioning usernames as a privacy-focused tool that allows users to create a distinct identity on the platform while keeping their phone numbers hidden.
According to the Meta-owned company, the move is designed to give its more than three billion users a way to stay in touch with new people without handing over personal contact details.
However, the new feature has left many users wondering whether they should choose their real name, a variation of it, or something completely different.
"Do not use your real name as your WhatsApp username. Nor should you keep it the same as your Instagram handle, X handle, or Telegram handle. Even with passkeys, don’t do it. Thank me later," one user wrote on X.
Another user asked, "Is it a good idea to take my own name as the WhatsApp username instead of my Instagram handle?"
A third user expressed concerns about privacy and spam. "People are rushing to claim WhatsApp usernames matching their names or social media handles. Does this mean anyone can call or message you just by using that username? If yes, that could quickly turn into a spam and privacy nightmare," the user wrote.
Should you use your real name?
The answer depends largely on how you use WhatsApp.Using your real name can be a good idea if:
- You mainly use WhatsApp for family, friends, and professional contacts.
- You want people to recognize you easily.
- You use WhatsApp for networking, business, or something where credibility matters.
- Your name is relatively common and does not create significant privacy concerns.
- You frequently interact with strangers, public groups, or online communities.
- You want an additional layer of privacy.
- Your full name is uncommon and easily searchable online.
About the WhatsApp username feature
WhatsApp is positioning usernames as a privacy-focused tool that allows users to create a distinct identity on the platform while keeping their phone numbers hidden. The username can be the same as your Instagram or Facebook handle, or it can be entirely different. During the reservation process, users can also choose to reserve the same username they use on Instagram or Facebook for consistency across Meta’s platforms.
According to the company, the feature was developed to address a common concern: sharing your phone number with someone you have just met.
For example, users may want to connect with people they meet at events without exchanging phone numbers immediately. Similarly, joining community or neighbourhood groups often means exposing a personal phone number to dozens or even hundreds of strangers. Usernames are intended to provide an alternative way to connect while offering greater control over personal information.
