The Indian government has issued a notice due to an increase in Covid-19 instances in China and other nations. States have been instructed to increase vigilance and prepare for genome sequencing of positive case samples in order to track existing and new variations.

In the middle of the Covid crisis, a WhatsApp message has been spreading that claims the newly identified XBB subvariant of Omicron is five times more virulent and has a greater fatality rate than the Delta variant. It also advises that its symptoms differ greatly from those of other sub variants.

The Union Health Ministry has labelled this WhatsApp communication as fraudulent and deceptive. It is not recommended that people believe it or spread it.


According to the World Health Organization (WHO), existing statistics do not indicate that XBB is more fatal than Omicron, which is less harmful than the Delta version.

According to a survey done in November 2022, debunking assertions that the XBB form is more lethal or produces more severe Covid-19 than the Delta type.

Given the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in China and other countries, the Centre has encouraged governments to increase vigilance and begin genome sequencing of positive case samples in order to track current and new variations.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday to examine the Covid-19 situation in India and the public health system's readiness for monitoring, containment, and management of the virus in light of the recent surge in cases in several countries. Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health, Dr. V.K. Paul, and other top officials attended the meeting.
