WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is widely rolling out the "Text detection" feature on iOS, which allows users to extract text directly from an image. According to WABetaInfo, the company is rolling out this feature to all users who have installed the latest WhatsApp for iOS 23.5.77 update. When users open a text-containing image, they will notice a new button that enables them to copy text from the image.

The changelog for the update, which is available on the Apple App Store, does not mention the text detection feature. It only mentions the ability to record a voice note and share it via Status, among other things. However, WaBetaInfo confirms in its report that more people who install the update would be able to use this feature. However, the feature is only available on iOS 16 because WhatsApp detects text within images using iOS 16 APIs. This feature is incompatible with viewing once images due to privacy concerns.

It was reported last month that the messaging platform was releasing a sticker-maker tool for iOS that enables users to convert pictures into stickers. WhatsApp began widely rolling out the 'voice status updates' feature on iOS earlier this week, allowing users to record a voice note and share it through Status. A voice note can be recorded for a maximum of 30 seconds, and users also can send voice notes from their chats to status.

WhatsApp is also said to be developing an additional feature that will make it easier to identify messages sent by unknown contacts in WhatsApp group chats. According to the report, whenever a user receives a message from an unknown contact in a group chat, they will see a push name rather than the mobile number in the chat list.
