What to do with old towels? Try these 4 simple DIY ideas to turn them into useful household items

Old towels often become rough, thin or worn out after repeated use and are usually pushed aside or thrown away. Instead of discarding them, you can give them a second life with a few simple DIY ideas.

1. Turn old towels into cleaning cloths

One of the easiest ways to reuse an old towel is to cut it into smaller cleaning cloths. It works well for wiping kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, windows and other areas around the house. Cut the towel into medium-sized squares or rectangles.

2. Make a simple bath mat

If you have a large, thick towel that is no longer suitable for bathing, turn it into a basic bath mat. Fold the towel into a suitable size and stitch the edges to prevent excessive fraying. For extra thickness, you can layer two old towels together. Place the finished mat outside the shower or bathtub to absorb water and help keep the floor dry.

3. Create reusable kitchen towels

Old towels can also be converted into smaller kitchen towels for everyday use. Cut them into convenient sizes. Use these reusable towels for drying dishes, wiping spills or cleaning kitchen surfaces. Wash them regularly and keep separate towels for food-related tasks and general cleaning.

4. Make reusable mop or floor-cleaning pads

The absorbent texture of old towels makes them useful for floor cleaning. Cut the towel according to the size of your mop head and secure it using the mop's existing clips, straps or fasteners.

After cleaning, simply wash the towel and reuse it. This can reduce the need for disposable cleaning pads and helps make use of towels that would otherwise go to waste.

Things to keep in mind

Before repurposing an old towel, wash it thoroughly and check for mould, unpleasant odours or excessive damage. Avoid using heavily worn or stained towels for kitchen-related tasks. If cutting the towel, use sharp scissors and handle them carefully.
