What to do with empty perfume bottles? Try these 3 creative DIY reuse ideas for a fresh-smelling and stylish home

Before throwing an empty perfume bottle away, take a second look at it. Many fragrance bottles are made from attractive glass and distinctive shapes, making them ideal for creative and practical reuse around the home.

Instead of letting them collect dust or sending them to the bin, you can turn them into useful household items with a little cleaning and creativity.

Clean the Perfume Bottle First

Before reusing an empty perfume bottle, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned. Wash the bottle with warm, soapy water to remove any remaining fragrance and oils.

Rinse it well and allow it to dry completely before using it for another purpose. If you're planning to reuse the spray mechanism, clean that part carefully as well.

1. Turn It Into a DIY Room Freshener

One of the easiest ways to reuse a perfume bottle is to transform it into a homemade room spray.

Fill the cleaned bottle with distilled water, then add around 10 to 15 drops of your favourite essential oil. You can also add a small amount of rubbing alcohol to help the oil disperse more evenly through the water.

Close the bottle, shake it well and spray it around your home. It can be used to freshen the air or lightly scent items such as curtains and bedsheets.

Remember to shake the bottle before each use because the ingredients may separate over time.

2. Make a Handy Travel-Sized Spray Bottle

If the original spray mechanism still works, an empty perfume bottle can become a convenient travel container.

Instead of carrying a full-sized perfume bottle, you can fill the smaller bottle with a small quantity of your favourite fragrance. It can also be used for products such as face mist or other suitable liquid products, provided the bottle is thoroughly cleaned first.

Its compact size makes it convenient for handbags and travel bags, while the refillable design can help reduce the need for disposable travel-sized containers.

3. Turn It Into a Decorative Candle Holder

If the spray pump no longer works properly, you can still reuse the glass bottle as a decorative piece.

Depending on its shape and opening, some perfume bottles can accommodate a small candle or tea light. When lit safely, the candlelight can highlight the bottle's colour, glass and design, creating an attractive decorative accent.

Safety tip: Never place a candle inside or on a perfume bottle unless the bottle is specifically suitable for candle use. Keep any flame away from curtains, paper and other flammable materials, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
