As the year comes to a close, car manufacturers are providing substantial discounts on their vehicles, particularly in the run-up to Christmas. According to current market trends, Indian customers are more interested in purchasing sport utility vehicles, commonly known as SUVs. The GST Council released a set of guidelines on Saturday to establish how MUVs and SUVs will be categorised for the 22% compensation cess. If you're in the market for a new sport utility vehicle (SUV), you should do some research to see if your prospective purchase will be taxed as a full-fledged SUV or a Sub-four meter SUV.

Cars with engine displacements greater than 1500 cc, overall lengths greater than 4000 mm, and ground clearances greater than 170 mm now have an effective tax rate of 50%, comprising a GST of 28% and a cess of 22. Producers are often at a loss because there is no agreed-upon definition of an SUV.

According to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the higher rate of compensation cess of 22 percent is payable to a motor vehicle that meets all four parameters. India's finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has stated that the argument over MUVs began when certain states questioned whether sedans should be termed SUVs. The states also suggested that a MUV (Multi Utility Vehicle) definition be adopted.

A committee will decide whether mobility utility vehicles must also confirm these norms to be taxed at a higher rate.

According to the minister, the Council has decided to have a team of central and state tax authorities (or the Fitment Committee) assesses whether any other types of motor vehicles should be subject to the 22 percent cess.

Separately, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed the media following the 48th GST Council meeting, stating that due to time restrictions, the Council could only debate on 8 of the 15 agenda items, but that no extra taxes had been enacted.
