‘What is really safe anymore’: After fake Eno and maggie, factory busted for making counterfeit Colgate toothpaste

Authorities in Gujarat have uncovered a factory allegedly involved in the large-scale production of counterfeit Colgate toothpaste, raising fresh concerns about the growing spread of fake consumer goods in India.

According to reports, the unit—located in Gujarat’s Kutch district—was manufacturing fake Colgate toothpaste. Police have arrested one person, identified as Rajesh Makwana, in connection with the case.

A post on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted the alarming nature of the racket, stating: “Recently, a racket manufacturing fake Sensodyne toothpaste, fake Eno, and fake Gold Flake cigarettes was busted in Delhi. Think about it—if even essentials like toothpaste and medicine are being faked, what is really safe anymore? These are not just frauds; they are slow poisons disguised as daily products that we unknowingly consume.”


According to a report by DeshGujarat, the accused allegedly used cheap and substandard ingredients to produce counterfeit toothpaste, which was then sold in the market as genuine Colgate products. Police seized goods worth approximately ₹9.43 lakh, including counterfeit toothpaste, packaging materials, and manufacturing equipment. Authorities are currently investigating the distribution network and identifying where the fake products were sold.

This is not an isolated incident. In July 2025, police in Surat busted a fake masala manufacturing unit at Chamunda Industrial Estate, arresting five people for producing duplicate Maggi and Everest masalas. Similarly, in August 2025, Delhi Police’s crime branch exposed a large-scale racket producing and distributing fake consumer goods, including ENO antacids, Sensodyne toothpaste, and cigarettes.


Experts have warned that consuming counterfeit products can pose serious health risks. Fake antacids may contain harmful chemicals or incorrect dosages that could lead to stomach irritation, acid reflux, or allergic reactions. Counterfeit toothpaste may contain toxic substances or abrasives that damage teeth and gums over time, while fake cigarettes could include unsafe tobacco blends that increase the risk of respiratory and heart diseases.

With counterfeit goods infiltrating everyday essentials, authorities are urging consumers to stay vigilant. Always purchase products from authorised sellers and verify packaging details for authenticity before use.
