What is Narali Purnima? Here's all you need to know

Largely celebrated by those in fishing and other sea related activities, Narali Purnima is a festival dedicated to worshipping the lord of the sea - Varuna.

Celebrated predominantly in the coastal regions of Maharashtra, the festival marks the onset of the fishing season. It is held on the full-moon day of the month of Shravan; this year, the occasion will be observed on August 12.

Fishermen make generous offerings to the lord of the sea on this day, before they begin the season. Boats are painted fresh and decorated on this occasion.


Coconuts are of special significance during the celebration, with fishermen making offerings of the fruit to the gods, which are later used to make sweet dishes for the occasion.
