Weather update today, August 12: IMD issues extremely heavy rain alert for Rajasthan, check forecast for states across the country

The India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather bulletin covering the week from 11th to 17th August, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over east Rajasthan on 11th August, the most severe category in the department's rainfall classification. Widespread to fairly widespread rain is expected to sweep across the Himalayan states, the northeastern region, large parts of central India and much of the peninsula through the week, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds touching 60 kmph in several pockets. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands face the additional risk of a thundersquall with winds gusting to 70 kmph, while parts of West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand have been placed under a warning for moderate to severe lightning activity. The weather office has flagged the possibility of waterlogging, landslides and disruption to road, rail and air traffic in the worst hit regions, and has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert through the coming week.

Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh

Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, along with Himachal Pradesh, are expected to receive widespread to fairly widespread rainfall through the entire week from 11th to 17th August. The union territory faces isolated heavy rainfall from 12th to 17th August, along with isolated very heavy rainfall on 11th August. Himachal Pradesh is likely to see isolated heavy rainfall on 12th and 13th August and again from 15th to 17th August, with isolated very heavy rainfall expected on 11th and 14th August.

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is forecast to receive widespread to fairly widespread rainfall for the entire week, with the risk of thunderstorms and lightning persisting throughout the same period. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected from 11th to 13th August and again from 15th to 17th August, while isolated very heavy rainfall is likely on 14th August.

Punjab, Haryana and Delhi-NCR

Punjab is set to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall on 14th August, with isolated to scattered showers on the remaining days of the week. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely on 12th August and again from 14th to 17th August, with isolated very heavy rainfall expected on 11th August.

Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are forecast to receive widespread to fairly widespread rainfall from 11th to 12th August and again from 14th to 15th August, with isolated to scattered showers on the remaining days. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected from 14th to 17th August, while isolated very heavy rainfall is likely on 11th August.

Uttar Pradesh

Eastern Uttar Pradesh is expected to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall from 14th to 17th August, with isolated heavy rainfall likely from 13th to 17th August and isolated very heavy rainfall on 11th August.

Western Uttar Pradesh remains largely in the isolated to scattered rainfall category through the week, with an isolated thunderstorm forecast on 11th August. The region faces isolated heavy rainfall from 14th to 17th August, along with isolated very heavy rainfall on 11th August.

Rajasthan

Eastern Rajasthan carries the most serious warning in this week's bulletin, with the weather office flagging heavy to very heavy rainfall, including isolated extremely heavy spells, on 11th August. The region is also forecast to receive widespread to fairly widespread rainfall from 11th to 13th August, isolated heavy rainfall on 11th August and again from 13th to 14th August, and isolated very heavy rainfall on 12th August.

Western Rajasthan is expected to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall on 12th August, with isolated heavy rainfall likely from 11th to 12th August.

Madhya Pradesh

Western Madhya Pradesh is forecast to receive widespread to fairly widespread rainfall from 11th to 15th August, tapering to isolated to scattered showers from 16th to 17th August. The region faces isolated heavy rainfall from 11th to 13th August, along with isolated very heavy rainfall on 11th August.

Eastern Madhya Pradesh is expected to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall for the entire week, with isolated heavy rainfall likely from 13th to 16th August.

Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh is set for widespread to fairly widespread rainfall through the entire week, with isolated thunderstorms forecast from 11th to 15th August and isolated heavy rainfall likely from 11th to 14th August.

Maharashtra and Goa

The Gujarat region is forecast to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall from 11th to 13th August, easing to isolated to scattered showers for the remainder of the week. Isolated thunderstorms are likely on 11th and 12th August, alongside isolated heavy rainfall over the same two days.

Saurashtra and Kutch are expected to remain in the isolated to scattered rainfall category through the week, with an isolated thunderstorm forecast on 11th and 12th August.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are forecast to receive widespread to fairly widespread rainfall for the entire week, with isolated heavy rainfall likely on 12th and 13th August. The islands also face the risk of a thundersquall, with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph, on 11th and 12th August.

West Bengal and Sikkim

Gangetic West Bengal is expected to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall for the entire week, with isolated heavy rainfall likely on 11th August and again from 13th to 15th August, and isolated very heavy rainfall on 12th August. The region has also been placed under a warning for moderate to severe lightning activity on 11th August.

The sub-Himalayan belt of West Bengal and Sikkim is forecast to see isolated to scattered showers on 11th August, shifting to widespread to fairly widespread rainfall from 12th to 17th August. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely across the entire week in this region.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are forecast to see isolated to scattered rainfall through the week, with the risk of thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, from 11th to 13th August, along with strong surface winds over the same period.

Rayalaseema faces an identical pattern, with isolated to scattered rainfall for the full week and thunderstorms, gusty winds and strong surface winds all concentrated between 11th and 13th August.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to see isolated to scattered rainfall for the entire week, with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, likely from 11th to 13th August.

Karnataka

Coastal Karnataka is forecast to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall through the entire week, with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, and strong surface winds likely from 11th to 13th August.

North Interior Karnataka is expected to see widespread to fairly widespread rainfall on 11th August, shifting to isolated to scattered showers from 12th to 17th August. The region faces thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, along with strong surface winds, from 11th to 13th August.
